In search of the last of the fiddleheads

This morning I intended to get my hands on some fiddlehead ferns, before they disappeared. Last Sunday I'd gone to the first of this summers Capitol Hill Farmers Markets, and found none present. So I pretty much had to get them today as the season is basically over.

So today I hopped a bus to the UDistrict farmers market, with the intension of wandering through the UDistrict Street Fair which runs this weekend, as it turns out the Street Fair turned out the farmers market - using it's grounds for overflow parking. The fair itself was funish - but as such event tend to be, overflowing with elephant ears, hand made art, and hippy jewelry. Not quite my gig.

So I hopped a bus to the Pike Place Market. Which was having the Seattle Cheese Festival - so utter chaos. On the upside the market was closed to cars - so less dangerous chaos than usual for a summer weekend. And free cheese! Lots of free cheese - much of it good. After having my fill, I fought my way inside and indeed got the last of the fiddleheads for the season (at least from the stall I was buying for).

I wandered up the hill and I'm know enjoying a meze plate lunch, including some fiddleheads, blanched and briefly sautéed in butter. Rather like super tender asparagus. Yummy!
